Cradle to Cradle Inspired Buildings

Our aim is to design buildings like trees and cities like forests. The Cradle to Cradle design concept drives the design of the built environment toward a beneficial footprint that goes beyond sustainability. In this sense, the projects seek effectiveness instead of efficiency-which only means reducing the bad impacts on the occupants and the environment.

We are aiming to become native to our place, with a built environment that is as effective as nature. That is possible when the different types of waste produced are nutrients for other systems and managed in biological or technical cycles, energy is produced with the use of renewable resources, and diversity is promoted.

Cradle to Cradle Inspired Buildings
Cradle to Cradle inspired buildings are about putting these concepts into practice through creative elements that celebrate human ingenuity and presence in the world. You can find some examples here:

EPEA´s support for the integration of Cradle to Cradle in the building development process

Drees & Sommer Cooperation
EPEA is partnering with the company Drees & Sommer to leverage innovation in design, construction and building operation through the implementation of the Cradle to Cradle design concept in the construction industry. Our intention is to support clients involved in the whole chain of the built environment. For more information about the work of Drees & Sommer with Cradle to Cradle please click here.

Buildings as Material Banks (BAMB) project
Since September 2015, EPEA is part of the BAMB consortium of 16 interdisciplinary European partners. The aims of the project are the elimination of construction and demolition waste, an increased use of recycled materials and the shift of the construction industry towards a circular economy through symbiotic partnerships amongst material users. Please find more information on or download the BAMB-flyer.

We offer workshops and trainings as well as a range of other options to bring in a Cradle to Cradle element to your building:

  • Analysis and review of existing design documents
  • Design strategies
  • Goal setting
  • Stakeholder dialogue
  • Support of the tender process
  • Cradle to Cradle CertifiedTM products selection
  • QuickScan or full assessment of current building materials or products
  • Screening and recommendation of alternative building materials or products
  • Indoor air quality and materials emissions testing
