Cradle to Cradle® Certification

EPEA is one of the companies offering Cradle to Cradle® Certification in cooperation with the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute, San Francisco (C2CPII).

Here is a rough overview of principles and certification process. For further information please read the documents on this website.

In some cases it is not clear at the beginning whether a product can be certified due to certain product properties or restrictions by the Cradle to Cradle CertifiedCM Product Standard. In those cases we offer a Pre-Screening for a price of 3500€ which will result in a statement about possibility of certification. These costs will be offset in a possible subsequent certification project.

Generally the Cradle to Cradle® Certification process consists of 4 steps:
• Material Assessment: Requires declaration of all ingredients of a product (= all chemicals and all CAS-numbers), not only generic names.
Exception: Basic level, which is a provisional one, expiring automatically after 2 years. Generic level sufficient.
• Process Evaluation: Evaluation of the production process according to the criteria Renewable Energy, Social Fairness, Water Management
• Audit (done by C2CPII)
• Certificate (issued by C2CPII)

The product is assessed according to the following criteria:
• Material Health
• Reutilization in technical or biological metabolisms
• Energy strategies of production process
• Social policies
• Water strategy in production process

As of January 1st, 2013 the new version 3 of the Cradle to Cradle product certification program is valid. All certification documents are being reviewed and updated at the moment. Please visit the C2CPII website (www.c2ccertified.org) for more information on the new version or contact us at certification(at)epea.com.

Products that use materials that are environmentally secure, healthy and recyclable are awarded the Cradle to Cradle® Certificate which is administered by the non-profit organization, Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute, in California/USA. Additionally, the use of renewable energies, a responsible attitude towards water usage, as well as other social aspects are considered. The certificate is valid for one year. Recertification entails the product quality being confirmed and indeed, there is the possibility that if progress is made, a higher grade of certification can be achieved. The Cradle to Cradle®-certification provides companies with the opportunity of illustrating the successes and progress their products have achieved. From a consumer perspective, products can be sought out based on having satisfied this further demand relating to quality. The certification portrays to what extent a product satisfies the requirements of Cradle to Cradle®. There are four different grades of certification. They are Basic, Silver, Gold, and Platinum.
